Where are your treasures?

BethanySMC - Thursday, 27 October 2011 11:11

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. Mt 6:19-21

Treasures are something that we collect for future use. Anything that is of great value to us and stored for days to come would qualify as our treasures. Most commonly known treasures are accumulated wealth, jewels or precious metals hidden for future needs.

The point Jesus is making by speaking of treasures, is one of the most challenging for me: lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth. It is challenging not because I have some valuable things buried in my backyard, rather than, I see a tendency in my heart to think of some things as means of future security.

It is interesting how Jesus made this connection between treasures and the heart. The heart follows the treasures and I must admit my heart is drawn in a wrong direction sometimes. Our jobs, houses, savings and other possessions or the work of our hands often becomes a source upon which we rely to take care of us in the future.

To store treasures on the earth is very unreliable, to say the least. In Luke 12:10 Jesus called such a man a fool who accumulated much for himself, relying on it for years to come. Here on earth even the most hidden and secured treasures are subject to corruption – by moth, rust, and thieves.

Treasures on earth are nothing but deceitful treasures – they are able to steal your heart, offering no real security for your life or your well being in the future. “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee, then whose shall those things be which thou hast provided?” Luke 12

Relying upon something on the earth sets you on a wrong journey toward wrong goals and fills your heart with wrong motives. In contrast, Jesus offers us an opportunity to be rich toward God and store treasures for eternity. Sooner or later, we will be gone from this earth. Let us use every occasion to gather treasures in heaven. Let us keep eternity in mind when we choose what to do with what we have. Let nothing on this earth steal your heart and eternal perspective.
