The wayside listener

BethanySMC - Thursday, 3 May 2012 07:34

And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up. Mk.4:4

It is not hard to picture the wayside; a sidewalk is probably the easiest to picture. Whenever there is a road or a pathway, there is always going to be a wayside. Through much traffic on the road, the wayside also gets used up and becomes hard. Every time someone steps on it or drives on it, it gets harder and harder.

Where the Word of God is preached there is always going to be listeners who are like that way side. While they hear a sermon, at the same time their mind is bombarded with thoughts, desires, and plans. Because of the “high traffic” of all those thoughts- the word of God cannot penetrate the hard soil of that heart. Other things of higher priorities make such a hearer a wayside hearer.

On other occasions, a way side listener may be an individual who hardens his heart purposefully to the Word of God by stretching the time of repentance and rejecting the truth. Every time a person rejects the voice of God, the heart becomes more and more like the wayside where no fruits grow and the devil has much liberty. It is a very dangerous condition to be in because if God chooses to judge such a person – there is going to be no more chance of repentance. A number of times we read in the Bible that God hardened the hearts of men when they chose to harden themselves towards the word of God.   God gave them up to walk in darkness as it said:  For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections Ro.1:26

There are also those who have heard the word of God for a number of years, who have read the bible from cover to cover time and again and the truth that once excited them became just something they know and heard many times. This wayside hearer can be sitting in the church pews with an all knowing heart unable to receive word from God. Many of such old time Christians can end up being wayside listeners – dried and hardened to the word that is preached.

All these different examples speak of the same truth. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. Lk.8:12
