Pitfalls of technology

1Co.7:23 You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.

It is not a secret that in the last 100 years we see technological advances that the world has never seen before. In leading countries of this world, technology is used on a large scale in every part of everyday life. The growing influence of technology on people and observing some of the negative effects on our generation motivated me to warn you of the technological nets that can bind you and make your soul vulnerable to the enemy and change your destiny forever.

Recently my view on technological advancement changed. I’ve always considered technology as a tool that can be used for good or for bad; something neutral, with no negative affects, if it was used for good. I’m sure many of you feel the same way. You see, nowadays technology has changed the way people live and think, changed the way they spend time and work – many things are becoming easier and faster, more convenient, and could produce better results. It is so appealing, that not many are able to resist the temptation to advance together with technology without seeing effects of it on their lives.

If you use any manual tool long enough, you will feel and perhaps notice its effect on your body. If you work all day with a hammer or a shovel – after a while you are going to have blisters on your hands, your arms will be tired and you hands worn out. This is what you can see and feel. Technological effects are more sophisticated and more deceiving – many times you cannot feel or see them at all, unless you pause for honest self examination.

I want to make it clear, I do not suggest renouncing technology all together and going back to “stone age”. I see more and more people in danger of becoming slaves to it and I want to blow a trumpet of warning. We need to be open minded but not to the extent that our “brains start falling out”.

Let me bring to you attention just a few observations.

Good e-tools for studying the bible can help you a lot in your studying the scriptures. However, if e-way is the major way how you read, search and study the bible- it becomes unnecessary to memorize those scriptures that were intended by God to be in our hearts. When you face a temptation, you will overcome them by the word of God that is in your heart. Many times when you meet Jehovah Witnesses or you are trying to witness to someone you can’t remember many scriptures. Why?

Entertainment with all the games and movies causes young people to think of the service of God as boring. Constant access to videos kills the family prayer time, bible reading and personal prayer time, as well as family’s service to God. Less than 4% of Christians can manage TV and their bible reading and prayer life. In overwhelming cases, watching something useless takes the majority of time that would have been needed to be spent more productively!

Cell and smart phones with all its fancy features kills the responsible communication and nowadays young people would rather text or chat but hardly talk. 24/7 access to the internet gives much space for the devil to tempt, especially the youth with all kinds of stuff. Thus, many are bound and are slaves to all kind of immorality and sins.

As technology integrates more and more in our lives we become so dependent on it, addicted and unable to survive without it. There is no more desire to read- if we read something it must be short, otherwise we rather watch something – that is a sure way to destroy deep thinking. Practical life skills are dying out with our grand parents and we become slaves to those who control technology.

I want you to be aware of the fact that technology has its own pitfalls and we should not rely on it too much. Perhaps limit use of it. The harder way might be better for you in a long run, the old simple methods often are more reliable then those new fancy ones. Discipline yourself and gain a few of those “old school” skills that will help you when trouble comes. Choose to read and live simple.

I wish to write in much detail, but I am forced to finish- not many are able to read for a long time anymore. A lot of people will not even start reading at all if it seems too long.
