Blessed are the peacemakers

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Mat 5:9

A Peacemaker is the one who makes peace, especially by reconciling parties at variance.

A while ago, I saw an article in the news about NATO bringing peace troops to some troubled region. On the photo next to the article were soldiers, heavy artillery, tanks and other military equipment. Such peacemakers were ready to destroy anyone who would continue opposition. Would you call such peacemaking blessed?

All of us have seen conflicts. As a matter of fact, time and again you were playing a big part in them. Blessed are you if your part was to bring peace into the area of conflict. Blessed are you if you were humble enough to act and speak in such a way that quenches the fire and calms down the storm.  Can you picture a proud and selfish man resolving a conflict peacefully? Without genuine concern for peace and people, it is virtually impossible to bring someone to peace, no matter what kind of “game” the mediator is playing.

From my observation: the power you have, education or cleverness – play a very little part in genuine peacemaking. It may end up ok from time to time depending on the situation. However, such peacemaking usually ends up in judging who is “right” and who is “wrong” – taking side with the “right” party and together crushing the opposition. To be able to reconcile enemies takes something different than all of that.

The way God’s children make peace is very different. The power of peacemaking lies within the character of the one who makes peace. First and foremost, they are humble people willing to take the blame for someone’s fault upon themselves for the cause of peace. They are ready to become a “doormat” in the process, as long as it brings the desired peace. They speak truth in love to those who fight, and are not offended that someone stepped on, or over them. They do not rely on education, experience or abilities- rather they seek God’s face for guidance and anointing that breaks the yoke of tension.

There is something in them from God. Maybe it’s the peace that God gives to all the righteous; maybe it is the character of Christ that they reflect. Calm, anointed words of truth penetrate to the innermost parts – breaking the tension and bringing peace. There is no judging or taking sides- just a genuine desire to establish peace.

Lord, help us to be such people of peace, so we would have no wars or strife among ourselves. Lord, help us not to have enemies – to be people that by the grace of God make peace in places where peace is long gone. Blessed are the peacemakers, for one day God will tell them: “Well done my children! Come see what I’ve prepared for you!” At that time the sorrows and humiliations of this world will be forgotten. Accusations and things you went through for the sake of peace will be exchanged for joy. By no means will any of us regret anything that we did to bring God’s peace down to earth – reconciling with God and with each other.

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: He.12:14
