Being born again

Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. 1 Peter 1:23-25

When we hear that someone was born, we know right away that a new person has come into this world. There are certain things that must take place and conditions must be met before any birth can take place. The physical birth where a baby is born to parents, the bible calls the birth as “of corruptible seed”. The innocent baby upon birth is subject to corruption by dishonesty, immorality, evil examples; the list can go on an on. Even the tender body of a baby is subject to decay and destruction and surely will change and eventually die. This is a classic picture of the end of all the living things that once were born. Birth of corruptible seed – inherits corruption one way or the other.

There is also a supernatural birth by incorruptible seed that we read in 1Peter. It takes place when the word of God, when it is preached, finds the good soil to grow in the heart of men. It can happen all at once or the Word of God must be read and re-read and heard many times until it finds its way into the heart. Once it is there, day by day, this seed is growing and at the same time the individual’s faith is growing and some noticeable changes in character and life take place. People begin to experience fellowship with God on a level they could not imagine before. Love for God and for His word is growing; the spiritual eyes that once were blind begin to open. Before this new birth takes place, it takes commitment and a significant level of effort, to act upon faith that is now in the heart and is often not an easy process. Many people stop in the process, overlooking words from our Lord Jesus: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Having experienced some change, accumulated some knowledge about God, they stop- never being born again.

The new birth usually follows by confession and tears of repentance for the sins that have been committed against God and other people. The Holy Spirit of God makes it clear to the heart that without Christ and faith in Him, without relying on what Jesus has done – we have absolutely no chance to be saved. The only hope is Jesus! The only way is Jesus! Assurance of salvation and a huge desire to live life for Him in complete surrender and obedience, mark the first steps of a newly born individual.  A Radical change in life takes place after a new birth – the purpose to lead a new life is steadfast and at the same time, sinful things become no longer enjoyable or desirable. The only people who will be in heaven are those who have been regenerated through the new birth. Will you be there?
