A cry for bread

Give us this day our daily bread. Matt. 6:11

The layout of the prayer “our Father” that the Lord thought us to pray, suggests that this prayer should begin our day and set our perspective for the whole day. Let us pay closer attention to the cry that should proceed from our heart each morning, “give us this day our daily bread.” The word bread is often used to mean different things. People refer to it when they speak of the bread that they can eat; others, something that they earn or produce, something that sustains life.

It is much possible that the bread that Jesus was referring to, is not merely a substance that nourishes our bodies but our spirit within us; the bread that gives life and keeps us alive spiritually. Without proper nourishment, our physical bodies suffer and if we neglect to feed our body, sooner or later, you can get sick.

In the physical world, you cannot rely on meals that you eat on weekends to sustain you for a week. To go through each new day you need fresh food for that day. The same way spiritually, man shall not live by bread alone, said Jesus, but by every word that proceed out of the mouth of God. To be well spiritually we need such bread daily. Let us not go to sleep starving spiritually! May this cry for bread for our inner man remain in our hearts throughout the day so we can grow and be strong and active for the Lord.

It is time to set aside activities that rob you of the meals that God has prepared for you daily. I stand at the door and knock, said Jesus – I have a meal prepared for you. Will you shut your TV off, turn off the computer and put away those useless games and have communion with me? Each day God has a word for you, it is up to you to open the door for Him and have a meal together.
